Growing Up at Balaton

My name is Daniel Kovacs. I was born in Budapest but spent every summer of my childhood at my grandparents' house near Balatonfured. Those summers shaped my relationship with the lake and the region in ways that no amount of adult travel could replicate.

As a child, I learned to swim in Balaton's warm shallow waters. I explored the Tihany Peninsula on foot, picked lavender in the fields above the abbey, and ate langos at beach kiosks where the woman behind the counter knew my family by name. These experiences gave me a deep, personal connection to a place that most visitors only experience as a vacation destination.

Why I Write About Balaton

After university, I moved to Budapest permanently and built a career in urban planning. But I kept returning to Balaton every chance I got. Weekends, holidays, long autumn drives just to walk along an empty promenade in November.

I started writing about the lake when friends visiting from abroad asked for recommendations. My suggestions were always different from what the guidebooks said, because they came from actual experience rather than press releases. When those friends came back saying my tips were better than anything they found online, I decided to put them on a proper website.

My Approach

Everything on this site comes from personal visits and genuine experience. I do not write about places I have not been, and I do not recommend businesses that have paid me to do so. When I say a restaurant is good or a beach is overrated, it is because I have eaten there or swum there myself.

I try to update these guides at least twice a year, typically after spring and autumn visits. The Balaton region changes more than people expect. Restaurants close, new paths open, admission prices shift. I want the information here to be reliable when you actually plan your trip.

Beyond the Lake

While Balaton is my primary subject, the surrounding region deserves attention too. The thermal waters of Heviz, the wine hills of Badacsony, and the national park trails in the Balaton Uplands are all part of the broader experience. I aim to cover these connections because a good Balaton trip extends beyond the shoreline.
